The Miracle Boots

We've been looking for cowboy boots for the young man since June.  June isn't the ideal month to start looking for boots, but we do live on a farm and we all wear boots regardless of the season.  Golden has been wearing rain-boots all summer, okay he's been wearing them since his birthday in November, two separate pairs (see the tribute to his first pair earlier on this blog).  So boot shopping, we're cheap, so this actually means thrift store shopping.  I don't know a single young boy that wouldn't wear out his boots, but we were still hopeful.

This is where the miracle comes in....Pete and I are not afraid to get to know others, actually we love chatting with everyone around, especially if they own a store in our lovely community.  We met Kelli in a funny round about way.  We had five extra flats of tomatoes one week.  You can't just hold on to tomatoes, so we started calling around.  These phone calls lead us to believe that no one in our community believed in organic/local produce, until someone tipped us off about the Peacock Cafe.  After entering and eating there, I can't believe this hip, artsy cafe exists in my community and I didn't know about it.  The food is divine.  The atmosphere makes me feel like I'm in Europe again and have all the time in the world to sit around and enjoy the moment and the people around me.  The owner, has now become a dear friend of ours.

While visiting her on her farm, my sweet cowboy-boot-seeking-three-year-old spotted a pair of boots on a counter.  He asked to put them on, this is a big deal because he is super shy around others, so for him to muster up enough courage to ask a person anything is huge.  The boots were a bit small, but with determination on his side, he squashed his feet into those boots and claimed they fit perfectly.  If walking with your heal up in the leg of the boot is a perfect fit, then he was right.  Pride beamed from his eyes, and eventually with enough walking around his foot actually slide down into the heal of the boot. Kelli, obviously noticed, and was tickled by his delight.  As she continued to show us around her farm she actually pulled out a bigger pair of black, vintage, leather cowboy boots.  Size, big enough to grow into.  He walked around in these for the rest of the tour.  As we were getting ready to go she got down at his level and told him he could have those boots, but he had to keep them forever and to remember his friend.  He said, "I will!"

There are wonderful people out there in the world.  Ones that make little boys dreams come true.  People that upon meeting, you become instant friends with.  It's like you had been friend before and were just waiting to meet again.  Kelli, thank you for being the miracle in our lives that day, and every day since.  Those boots are worn daily with a pep in his step that I haven't seen before.
