Celebrating Mother Earth

With Earth Day coming up and having spent our weekend at an Earth Day Celebration I can't help but reflect on the beauty that surrounds me.  Spring time is so incredible here, coming from the place of eternal sun and spring last perhaps a week or two (Arizona), I am elated to live where there are true seasons.  Slowly the green starts to come out, and then pop!  The green is joined by, pop, colors, by reds, yellows, whites, pale pinks, hot pinks, purple, orange, fire red......pop, pop, pop. It looks as if a painter has newly dipped his paintbrush on to his pallet and made a few striking strokes across this canvas called the Midwest.
My father tells of a wonderful encounter he had with my great grandfather Oliver, a painter.  It was said that Oliver looked up towards the mountain and asked Doug how many shades of green he saw.  'Hmmm", he thought to himself, "Around six?"  Not knowing the answer he returned the question back to great grandfather and asked him, "Well, how many can you see?"  With a smirk on his face great grandpa Oliver said, "Hundreds, my son, Hundreds."
My heart wells with gratitude as I think of colors and what joy they bring to my soul.  They enliven my life, make me breathe a little deeper, and smile a whole lot more.  I love Spring!  Even the dark rainy days like today, they give me a chance to slow down and find the time to write out some of my thoughts.
