Do I have the new, best, most excellent, all body work out for you! Here's how it works. You come over to our farm. You put my 22 lb. baby in my 15 lb. back pack and strap him on. Then you place the new red bike helmet on my three-year-old. Help him retrieve his bike from the porch, tie a rope to the handlebars and begin towing him up our rocky drive way. At the top he'll ask to be released from the rope, after which he'll take off down the largest hill on our dirt road.
You'll power walk, with baby in tow, down the hill attempting to keep up. The three year old will make sure that you receive enough weight training by handing you rocks to place in your pockets for 'later.' The baby on back, will test your balance by peering over the edge of the backpack periodically, leaning all of his weight to one side. Your leg workout will include squats when the three-year-old needs his shoe tied or wants to be lifted up on to the neighbors tractor. Upon reaching the bottom of the hill, when your movement is fluid and your tempo nice, the a fore mentioned three year old will 1) need a push, or 2) need to hand you yet another rock, or 3) need to hand you a really awkward long stick, which if you try to drop will make him cry.
Your breaths are short, your arms are a swinging, the baby is kicking you in the back in encouragement, and the UPS man is barreling up the road. Your thought is to run, but don't forget the little man on the bike, the potential of getting in poision ivy, and so you hold your ground on the edge of the dirt road and you brave up the dust cloud. Coughing you ask the three-year-old if you can take them home now. He wheels and deals with you, you bribe him with some treat back home and you turn around to face the 'big one', remember the long hill you came down? You refacen the rope to his handle bars and you lean into the climb. Who said Kansas was flat?
Once again your breaths are short and you focus....while pulling, you've got it! Then he slams his breaks and hops off his bike because he's found your favorite rock, and what's that tree, and who dug the ditch on the side of the road, and why did uncle so-and-so plant something there? Which is worse the fact that you've had to stop in the middle of this big hill or that he's full of questions when you are completely out of breath? No worries this is a full body work out, which includes using your mouth to answer questions, and brain power to come up with witty answers that would satisfy such a young mind.
We're feeling so nice about sharing our family workout with you, that if you sign-up today your workout membership will include a photo ID with a bar code, and we'll give the trail rate of $400. We might even let you have a drink out of our hose when you are all done.
I love reading your blog! And I'll pass on the workout offer. I'm pretty sure I would pass out.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I love it! I totally agree with the Kansas-is-not-flat argument. Over here we live on top of a hill, which is great fun when you're going TO any park, store or market on your bike (with trailer in tow) or walking with the stroller. It's getting back that's a bear!
ReplyDeleteClever and so, so true! People do pay for this! Love your sense of humor!
